Welcome to USA soccer circa 2014. We have a German coach, an exiled previous star and the biggest range of critics this side of Talladega.
"BAND WAGON" has become the hottest, elitist, patronizing thing to say since Michael Dukakis was in office. Lets just take a second to analyze this, throw away criticism. "You never rooted for Soccer/Futbol/hackey sack before!" I get it, you've been here since 6am camping out for the cause, you bleed RED WHITE and BLUE and you can't stand to hear someone "new" rooting for their country because you were here first? I can understand the argument that most of the "new" fans don't know most of the players names and most likely don't even know where Belgium is but lets be honest... you could get a good look at a T-bone by sticking your head up a Butcher's ass but wouldn't you rather take the Bull's word for it.
Here's my answer you no good, self righteous assholes. You know who Yzerman is? Ever hear of Chauncey Billups? There's this guy named Verlander... He throws fireballs and bangs super models... Yeah, they all played for teams i've camped out for and drank heavily to, singing incoherent, lazy acronym chants (get a new chant)... I'm not bragging by saying I've been spoiled to have grown up in a city rich in sports, poor in other areas... But I've never had to make an excuse to root for something simply because they were always good or at least respectable for the most part..
Now, living in NYC, i've been able to root for franchises I normally would have avoided, simply because of my proximity to the festivities. I've never loved the Giants and honestly think Coach Coughlin's constant look of disbelief is the most unsettling thing in sports BUT I do have a new found respect and enjoyment being in a city that embraces them so closely. I have myself become a "big city guy" (according to my fantasy football league) and it's true. Moving to a new city you want to find something to make you feel like you belong. Becoming a bar regular, making friends with your neighbors or even rooting for a team that once crushed your soul (and wallet) in the Superbowl. USA futbol is no different. We ALL want this to happen...
USA soccer is still a little baby infant in the world stage and that's just fine by me. I have no idea who can honestly be upset or feel entitled to criticize any "new" fan simply because they're getting caught up in the hype. If you're bragging about the USA's previous accolades/accomplishments and feel special for sticking with them, go get yourself a handie and rest easy knowing you're a patriot. You're rooting for the Jacksonville Jaguars of the World stage... And anyone who puts a claim on Mark Brunell's run to the playoffs is an ignorant buffoon.
I am a bandwagon fan in terms of how long I've rooted and I could care less who's on Belgium's squad (who's winning the match pop?) BUT It's rare to experience the feeling of not only rooting for a team but being surrounded by an ENTIRE BAR all chanting for something bigger than any NFC north division. In one hour I'm going to be high fiving a complete stranger simply because he's wearing an American Flag. Will we kiss? I don't know but it's Murica and that's allowed too.
We all can be little whiny, sensitive, PC loving cry babies in this country, but lets be that for the same common cause this go round. Put away the bandwagon banter and get your flags out.
YOU WANT FANS? YOU WANT GLORY? YOU WANT A BIGGER PORTION OF AMERICAN SPORTS PIE? YOU WANT SUPER MODELS AND NIKE DEALS?
JUST WIN BABY
the rest will take care of itself.
