Who needs Loch Ness when you've got Lagarfljótsormur?
A 13-member panel convened in Iceland has decided by a seven-vote (i.e. very narrow) majority that grainy footage released in 2012 in fact depicts Lagarfljótsormur, a legendary lake monster first reported in 1345.
According to Slate, the decision entitles the author of the footage to a small reward, although a Finnish researcher previously concluded that the video actually shows an ice-caked fishing net.
The move has been criticized as an obvious stunt to draw cryptotourism to Iceland.
It might be just as well that the Lagarfljótsormur footage isn't authentic -- in legend, the icy worm is said to be a harbinger of catastrophe.
In 2010, volcanic eruptions in Iceland were so bad that they disrupted travel to Europe. Recently, Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano has been erupting, spewing lava and sending tremors across the land. Thanks, Lagarfljótsormur.
Couple things here.
1. - Awesome. I love it that we finally have real proof that Lagarfljótsormur exists. I've been saying it for years. Anybody who knows me knows I'm a big Lagarfljótsormur guy, so to finally be able to look my friends in the eye and say, "fuck you idiot, I told you," is going to be fun.
2. - So now that we know, how do we start prepping for disaster? I mean, volcanoes are already going off in Iceland (sort of a paradoxical idea), but who knows when the big one's comin? Look if we have undeniable proof ratified by a board of 13 random Icelandics telling us that the beast responsible for signifying impending doom is legit, then what are we waiting around for? Especially after watching everything about global climate change yesterday, my disaster radar is going absolutely nuts right now.
P.S. My idea of how to get ahead of this inevitable armageddon? Start building floating cities and underwater cities, like in BioShock (ignore how nerdy that sentence is). "We can't do that, that's ridiculous!" Oh is it!? Is it ridiculous, guy? Is it ridiculous - like the existence of an ancient ice serpent in Iceland ridiculous? ... Yeah, fuck you.
