Oh that's right, because I have. Because for what seems like the billionth time in the last year we are put in a situation where we must look at ourselves with disgust as to how we can continue to allow these racist and horrifying acts of terrorism to be committed... and yet an alarming number of us continuously refuse to do so. Probably never will, if we're being honest. It really is starting to feel hopeless.
Every day you open Twitter, Facebook, go to whatever news source you use, you're almost guaranteed a new story serving as proof of how much of a foothold racism still has in our country, and yet NO change has seemingly been made. What is really different about how we are as a society from Ferguson to today? That was almost a full year ago and if anything, we've seemingly digressed since then. So many ignorant comments each story we see about "race-baiting", "white guilt", "you don't know the full story", "I'm not saying that guy's actions were okay, but..." Seriously, shut the fuck up. There is no "but" to any of this. This is wrong. All of these acts of violence and terrorism that we've seen in the past year and beyond, and many of the flippant and ignorant responses that too many of us have been responsible for, are wrong. Harboring racist feelings, perpetrating racist crimes, and sympathizing with or diminishing the evil behind those feelings or crimes is wrong. Period. And we're all guilty of allowing the issue to just continue to float over our heads without confronting it. Hell I'm not exonerating myself, I'm an asshole who writes this blog and posts Jon Stewart's words because he says things way better than I do, and that's it. What the fuck have I done that's fixing this problem? Not enough, that's for damn sure and I think plenty feel the same. So let's stop allowing this to be an issue that feels impossible to resolve. Let's stay aware and start looking for actions that can be taken.
And with that, here's a link to a petition to take the confederate flag down from the South Carolina State House:
Why? Cus fuck that thing. It's a symbol of racism that is allowed to be glorified because it's "historical." I'm not saying deny history, in fact I'm saying the opposite. Recognize history and recognize what that backwards ass symbol represents and understand why it should no longer be allowed to be glorified and legitimized by flying above a government building. Let's start actually doing shit to permanently shift our societal mindset away from one that allows racism to thrive.
